As the worst person in the world where maths are concerned, I know this will be wrong but, well, what the heck............

At the risk of great embarrassment, that looks too easy ....

Combined distance = 25+25 miles = 50 miles.
Combined time = 75+25 minutes = 100 minutes.
Speed = distance ÷ time = 50÷100 = ½ mile per minute
........ or, more typically, 30 mph..

So, tell me what I've missed.

Well you both are correct, though Chas was first of course.
Apparently most folk, including me, would just add the two speeds together and divide by two.

And me......

.....there is a mathematical "law" that you must never average, averages and Chas' calculation shows why

Since I thought that that was "obvious" and "easy", would you like an explanation of why The Fibonacci Sequence is central to the "casino games" of trading shocks and stares?

I'l try a bit of literary (and show-biz) allusion ....

Colin Baker lived in Rochdale.

I think the Rambler with the saddle sore song could be Mike Harding, AKA The Rochdale Cowboy.

Don't know about the first part of the clue though.

I was under the impression that Colin Baker was an "{Ah towd 'um} Owdum" lad.

However, Mike Harding is "bob on" and Rochdale is a misleading coincidence (or not coincident). He was a previous President of the Ramblers' Association ( and his grandad was the original "Manchester Rambler", having been an organizer of the "Kinder Scout mass trespass").

The missing member of the triumvirate was a noted literary figure, with celluloid connections.

Forgive me, what what is the connection between the first two, might give us a clue to the last one

The third person is/was a renowned author born and brought up in the "greater Manchester area" (much as the other two were).

There should be enough information to be getting on with .....
