Re: Where in Greece?
It is the Nestos John. There aren't too many rivers of that size in Greece. Any guess as to the nearest town?

That's the place John. I was getting a mite lost around these parts, and I had to stop off and get a map from a garage here. Very nice place.

Re: Where in Greece?
We were staying on Thassos at the time, and I had always fancied visiting Xanthi. The name, with 'golden' connotations conjured up an image of splendour and culture....................................Alas, not in reality. It is just a fairly typical Greek town. Industrial and industrious, and no doubt having some picturesque value somewhere, but not that evident to the casual observer.
We caught the ferry from Thassos town to Keramoti which is the departure point to reach Thassos from the airport.
A reasonable drive along the E90 got us to Xanthi around lunchtime, but none of the four of us really fancied the search for somewhere decent to eat. I daresay there are some great places there but, at that distance, we didn't have time to really do it justice. So, the decision was made to make our way back through the mountains to the north of Xanthi. (I wanted to go south east to Lake Vistonida, but was overruled)
It is really very picturesque in parts and eventually we stopped for a late lunch at a town called Paranesti, having stopped of for a drink at a taverna in Stavroupoli. Paranesti has this railway station that is reminiscent of the old wild west railways of John Wayne films etc.
After that as a diversion, we followed a sign for a new museum which appeared to be up in the mountains near to the Bulgarian border. A nice piece of brand new road (paid for by the EU), brought us to the lovely museum..................which was closed of course. Built of honey coloured stone it sort of nestled in a clearing among very tall pines. The road carried on up the mountain in the general direction of the Bulgarian border, and I was all for going up for a look, but the wimps that were with me, (including Carol , persuaded me otherwise. I think they were worried about itchy fingered Kalashnikov toting, communist border guards or some such. We carried on along the Thessalonika road almost as far as Drama, then we had a picnic in a small park in a village called Choristi, and then drove down to Philippi, where we had a late afternoon stroll around the ruins. We had a huge ice cream each from a road side seller, and then carried on to Kavala, where we caught the ferry back to Thassos. This way however takes you back to Prinos, some way up the coast from Thassos town .We often used this ferry as Carol and myself love Kavala, and we used to combine an afternoon in Kavala with a Wednesday morning at the market in Prinos. A great day out......So There.

Sounds great. Philipi was where Lydia in the bible was a seller of fine purple. Wonder if she's still there........
