Nutmeg is the connection.....It used to be grown on a single island control of which was contested to say the least. But during one period of British control they managed to plant some trees in America.

Nutmeg was incredibly expensive and unscrupulous traders in America would whittle pieces of wood to resemble a nutmeg and sell them on which is where the saying he's been nutmegged came from - it then got exported to football.
