Gregory saw Kazantzakis, laughing, to this empty rock where his empty grave was, giving the latter, at the same time, a lesson about life, death and immortality.

"I am not afraid of death; death is like a mule I'm going to ride to carry me away to God" he said and would go into fits of laughter, this short chubby bifurcate-bearded abbot, with the shing eyes and sparkling wit.


The question is, where did this take place?

I would guess that the place was Naxos John, where Kazantzakis spent his youth.

Yes that's the one - it's called Chrysoscalitissa.

The abbot mentioned was called Gregory Plokamakis and the quotation about the mule comes from "Report to Greco" by Mr K.

That is one his books that I haven't read SD. I do have a vague recollection of mention of a Plokamakis elsewhere though. Ah well.
