Yes, Joni Mitchell was in Matala. Can't remember any of the details, but it was in the groovy days when hippies slept in the caves. Just a bit before Chris. Wouldn't be allowed now.

No caves for me, that would have been luxury!! We were in a tent camped on a sandy slope near a ruined building. I remember a taverna owner getting us to make salads for his customers and then charged us for ours! We got incredibly drunk during our couple of nights in Matala then had the delights of a long bus journey back to Iraklion the following morning with a raging hangover and terrible dehydration. Yes sir, those were the days (oops, that's Hairy Mopkins, not Joni Mitchell!!!!)And it was the Mermaid Cafe?
