Unfortunately, they don't go to the majority of staff, as I knew too well!

Never having worked in a bank I just assumed that everyone in a senior post was well paid.

Maybe it depends on your length of service?

Re: Wordgame
Off at a tangent, in my previous employment in "heavy industry", some unskilled workers were paid far more than technical staff and managers!
True story - I was a programer/analyst, working on payroll systems at GEC, Trafford Park, through the mid-70s. At the time, most of our department were paid between £6,000 and £8,000 (for the manager, who was also nominally a director of "Lancashire Dynamo & Crypto", a defunct business within the group existing only at Companies House).
Just before the Christmas Holiday, a cleaner went to the payroll office to complain that his year-to-date pay had dropped to a couple of hundred quid. We were told to "sort it!, ASAP", because he was a shop-steward.
The problem turned out to be the print format on the pay packet; it was a limited space and could only cope with four digits in the pounds-box (no commas, so a maximum of £9,999). This particular chap actually had a year-to-date of (about) £10,200 .... with another three months to go!
Although his basic hourly rates was equivalent to the minimum, he got so many "bonus" payments for "danger", "extreme conditions", "unsociable hours" and so on, all because he swept up the metal turnings from milling machines and lathes, during lunch breaks and after shifts. He was an AEU man and we were (forced) members of ASTMS.

I also remember that in those days shopfloor workers were able to earn far more than most staff people because of high rates of payment, and endless opportunites, for overtime.

Re: Wordgame
That must have been very hard for a lot of people to accept?

Mmm...and chalk it up to experience...
Another true story - When I was about 22 I worked in an office. A young bloke joined the company, he was four years younger than me and did exactly the same job but was paid more...because he was male.

That rings a bell! We had a book of old sayings at home many years ago.

Does the long-range forecast point that way? Will England be able to beat the Aussies for "The Ashes"?

Re: Wordgame
Anybody thinking of defeating him had best arrange a place of safety, before the attempt, to hide from irate fans!

So if someone were to beat AM at Wimbledon this year I suppose it's likely that his lot would definitely NOT be a happy one.....like the policeman's!
