It is named after the Napoleonic era British Admiral - William Sidney Smith. I think the monte "bit" is a linguistic approximation for mount or hill.

This particular island may be regarded, in some ways, as two islands joined by a narrow strip of land. On ancient times the two were known as and (both 8 letters).

During the Byzantine era it was frequently raided by pirates and fell into decline but it sprang to life at the beginning of the revolution and took an active part.
