I do remember a mountain village on Samos that we didn't get to visit. That was in pine woods too. Damned if I can remember the name of it.

I did have in my mind that it could be either Samos or Chios.

I am having trouble with the four letter word that the flora provides. Strange as I don't normally have problems with four letter words.

Just to add a little more complication, the text is written 'Boustrophedon' style. You read one line in the normal direction and read the next in the opposite direction and so on
