Would you rather I took a turn Susie? Joy took my turn for me a while back when I was busy.  I have a little fun question but it can wait if you have something in the pipeline.  Very Happy

OK, it's probably very easy though if you watched The RHS Chelsea Flower Show on TV:

I am a plant, the only one that can count? ( Allegedly, possibly, probably.)

I can not only count but I have an appreciation of time, in the quantity of seconds.

You would probably find a few of me in your local garden centre if you look carefully.

What am I?

(What particular plant am I thinking of? Please do not look for something too scientific, complicated or debatable....)

An extra two bonus points if you can give a brief example of how I count or can be seen to be counting, and a scenario of how I can differentiate the time in seconds.

P.S. I do not have an Abacus and this question is not cryptic!   Very Happy

No sorry Susie, that's not what I am thinking of.........you are looking for a two word answer and there is a Greek connection of some sort...

P.S. You could actually say it is a three word answer as it depends how it is written. Also it is not a plant which is native to Greece.

Oops, sorry, it is actually a Roman connection not a Greek connection!    Embarassed

That might give you a clue! What might I have become confused over, that both the Romans and Ancient Greeks had?

Further to my note above:

If this was a crossword, the answer you want is either  (5, 7) or (5,3,4).

Roman connection, not Greek, please see previous posts and apologies again for my confusion!  Embarassed

But yes, you are looking for a goddess and an insect.

A Diptera is not a Spider, it is a ?

Don't forget you know the answer is either (5,7) or (5,3,4).

The only other clue I can think of is that part of it might provide a close shave for the ladies?

Diptera. True Flies / Mosquitoes / Gnats / Midges. The name Diptera, derived from the Greek words "di" meaning two and "ptera" meaning wings, refers to the fact

Has that got anything to do with anything?

One of the words you are looking for (3) is in your first sentence Susie, (not counting the word Diptera itself) , only in the singular not the plural.  Very Happy

Yes, that is correct Susie!

Over to you for the next question when you are ready, and of course if you want the bonus points then please feel free to answer the rest of the question. If not, I will write a little paragraph about counting and time when I have more time, busy weekend ahead.

Bye for now........

Re: General knowledge

Post by Weneki32 on Wed Aug 26, 2015 5:45 pm

Apologies for the delay in replying.

The way I understand it is that in the case of the Venus Fly Trap, each claw has only approx. six times that it can close. So it likes to be conservative so that it does not waste a closure. So if a bit of dirt or stray leaf falls in then it will not close straight away, that first hit by the piece of dirt is the number one in the counting process. If however,  a second movement is felt, then the plant is aware it could be an insect which is alive and worth devouring, so that is the count of two when the second movement is felt.

However, the second movement has to be within a specific period of time so that is when being able to judge the time comes in. I understand that second movement has to be within 20 seconds, if it is for example 30 seconds, then the Venus Fly Trap starts from scratch and counts that as a first movement again. I think an insect which is alive would not remain still for for more than 20 seconds, it is likely to buzz around a lot sooner than that, making a second hit within 20 seconds and thus indicating the possibility of a delicious meal to the plant.

I am sorry if I have not explained it very well, I love plants but I am not very scientific or technical!  I am sure there is loads of info online for those interested in more detail.

I hope you all have a lovely Bank Holiday Long Weekend, not too much rain I hope, and it is over to you Susie for the next question.   Very Happy

Wendy, that explains why all my fly traps died, I kept touching the leaves with a pencil LOL They ran out of closures! Would not even take raw meat after that. - I was very young!!

I will put my thinking cap on for a new question
