OK

One for you cycling buffs

Find the connection between an entry in this years Tour de France and a former driver in the National Touring Car Championship

Question...

In White`s Natural History of Selborne, what did the author think happened to Swallows in the British winter ?

And... For a bonus point, how did he account for small passerines turning up on our coasts in spring ( what we now know as migration ) ?

I think he believed swallows hibernated or hid in winter

Don't know about the bonus point, will do a google

Correct regarding the Swallows
As the last sightings in Autumn were over ponds etc and the first sightings in the Spring were in the same habitat, he assumed that they hibernated in the mud at the bottom of ponds. A reasonable assumption when you think about it

Await your response to the bonus question

It was thought that small birds flying in from the sea could not possibly have flown so far under their own steam ( we know differently now of course )
It was thought that they must have had assistance
What could that assistance have been ?

Did he think they hitched a ride on the backs of larger birds?

(Even if this ponus point answer is correct, I appreciate that it is Susie who got the main answer correct... Very Happy )
