The spike seems to be wound with leather to grip something and the end seems to be split as if to hold a pin to hold something on the spindle

Maybe something like a wool or thread large bobbin winder

Woodchester was the site of a roman palace.

The pavement can be found beneath the local churchyard.

The actual photo was taking at Prinknash Abbey where the replica has been housed for some years. Sadly it now looks as though the replica will end up in the USA

The original is never likely to be exposed again.
