This is how it looked from the sea in October 2008 ....nickandchris wrote:Correct, Susie, it is the smaller beach on the other side of Plakias. This was taken in 1992 so goodness knows what it looks like now.
The beach is off the left of this photo.

Re: Where in Greece?
It is Keith, one of my favourite places on Corfu
A few of the buildings have been restored in recent years but it is very slow progress.
There are two excellent and reasonably prices tavernas of long standing serving wonderful home cooked food. One of them Thomas's was featured in Rick Stein's TV program on Corfu food. The taverna opposite Thomas has, I believe, been there even longer, and serves the most delicious mouth watering, melting cheese pies I have ever tasted . The inside is adorned with old pictures from the days before the village was deserted. I am told the village was one of the ones originally built to escape the mosquitos which in those days carried malaria, Villagers only went down to the coast when they had to. When the malaria carrying mosquitoes were eradicated the villagers returned to live by the sea. leaving just the elderly in the hills.
If you are energetic, a 10 minute climb up the hill bring you to a load of bee hives with a delightful man selling honey. He speaks no English but with my limited greek we get by!! His honey is wonderful, he has several sorts depending on the season as the bees feed on the herbs which grow at various times of the year on the surrounding hillside
The drive up the village is steep and in places, little more than a gravel track, but it is well worth the effort. On our last visit to the island it was pouring down with rain and we decided it was a good time for another excursion to Old Perithia. We were not disappointed, no crowds, a huge welcome in the tavernas, and cool enough to climb higher to buy some honey to take home!!!

Re: Where in Greece?
Susie, although we visited the village last October it was a bit of a guess.
You are correct about the drive up the mainly gravel track, sometimes very hairy.
Having made the trek, we ate at Thomas`s & very nice it was.
Again you are right about the Rick Stein programme, we bought the DVD when we got back home, "Rick Stein`s Mediterranean Escapes".
We really enjoyed our visit there and as far as I am aware, they are trying to bring the village back to life
